ECO-FRIENDLY MILITARY FACILITIES

The transformation of the Workington Air Training Corps (ATC) facility is a shining example of how innovation and sustainability can come together to create an inspiring, modern, and eco-friendly environment for cadets and training staff. This project is not just about refurbishment; it’s a bold step toward embracing renewable energy and demonstrating a commitment to a greener, better future for military facilities.

CREATING A MODERN, EMPOWERING ENVIRONMENT

1. Walls that Inspire and Insulate:

  • By insulating and plaster boarding the walls, we’ve created a comfortable, modern interior that feels fresh and welcoming while dramatically improving the building’s thermal performance.

2. Brighter, More Efficient Spaces:

  • The installation of a sleek, suspended ceiling with state-of-the-art LED lighting not only enhances the aesthetics but reduces energy consumption by an incredible 64%, ensuring a brighter and more energy-conscious workspace.

3. Comfortable, Smart Heating for All Seasons:

  • New high-efficiency, programmable electric heating ensures every room is warm and inviting, cutting energy use by 38% and proving that sustainability doesn’t mean compromising comfort.

4. Harnessing the Power of the Sun:

  • Solar photovoltaic panels paired with advanced battery storage now generate 2,520 kWh of clean, renewable energy every year. The grid is now a secondary source—this building runs on the power of the future.

5. Safety and Security Redefined:

  • Upgraded fire detection systems, intruder alarms, and high-security entrance doors ensure peace of mind for all who use the facility, while fire-rated doors and frames enhance safety and compliance.

6. Sustainable from the Ground Up:

  • A new 100mm insulated metal-clad roof, energy-efficient double-glazed windows with excellent thermal performance and external LED security lighting contribute to both sustainability and a modern, professional look.

A COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABILITY AND CARBON REDUCTION

This project doesn’t just reduce the building’s energy consumption—it transforms it into a leader in renewable energy use. The integration of cutting-edge carbon reduction technologies ensures an annual carbon savings of 1,160 kg, setting a benchmark for environmentally responsible military facilities.

By electrifying heating and hot water systems and significantly reducing reliance on grid energy, this ATC unit proves that a decarbonised future is within reach. The modernisation demonstrates that creating a better working environment and supporting sustainability are not just achievable—they’re essential.

This isn’t just a refurbishment; it’s a revolution in how military facilities can evolve. By investing in renewable energy and prioritising energy efficiency, we’ve laid the foundation for a brighter, greener future for the cadets, staff, and generations to come.
